Local fruits – Perakka (Guava)

“Trees are the best monuments that a man can erect to his own memory. They speak his praises without flattery, and they are blessings to children yet unborn.” - Lord Orrery

Perakka (Guava) straight from the guava tree at the backyard, which is almost a quarter of a century old. Planted by my father, which has already fed four generations including his, apart from the oxygen and shade. What a meaningful and thoughtful act by him. Thank you Dad. Your Son, Grand daughter and Great Grandson could enjoy the fruits of that tree you planted twenty five years ago…..

Guava trees are small shrubby evergreen trees, with a lot of strong bony like branches. It is commonly found throughout Kerala and the main variety of guava cultivated and sold here is the apple guava. The fruits are fleshy and have a sweet taste. The fruit is rich in proteins, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin A, vitamin B3, vitamin B4 etc. Natural propagation is by birds and small animals. Different parts of the tree have medicinal properties. The decoction of the leaves and bark of this tree are used for treating various ailments such as diarrhea, dysentery, vomiting and sore throats, and also for regulating the menstrual cycles. They are also gargled to relieve oral ulcers and inflamed gums. The crushed leaves when applied on wounds relieve pain.

“Until you dig a hole, you plant a tree, you water it and make it survive, you haven't done a thing. You are just talking.” - Wangari Maathai
